Description: One of the world’s largest inland seas, the Salton Sea was created by accident in 1905 when flooding on the Colorado River allowed water to crash through canal barriers and for the next 18 months, the entire flow of the Colorado River rushed downhill into the Salton Trough. The sea is popular as a boating and fishing area. Catches have included striped bass, orange-mouth corvina, gulf croaker and sargo - but currently the best fishing is for Tilapia.
Swimmers, birdwatchers and other visitors can enjoy the site’s many recreation opportunities. Because of the sea’s low altitude (228 feet below sea level), atmospheric pressure improves speed and ski boat engine performance.
