Description: Allis State Park is named after Wallace Allis who willed his Bear Mountain Farm to the state of Vermont to be developed as a campground and recreational area. It is located on the summit of Bear Mountain. There is a fire tower located at the picnic area from which there are excellent views of central Vermont. On a clear day, Killington, Pico, and Ascutney peaks are visible to the south; Camel's Hump and Mt. Mansfield to the north; Abraham, Lincoln, and Ellen to the west; the White Mountains of New Hampshire to the east.
Baker Pond is nearby on Route 12, two miles west of the park; North and South ponds lie together one mile east of the park; Sunset Lake is in the village of Brookfield, two miles east of Bear Mountain.
The camping area, picnic area, and ranger's residence were built in 1932 and 1933 by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC).
Facilities: The campground at Allis State Park consists of 18 tent sites and 8 lean-to sites. Each of the 26 sites has a picnic table and a stone or brick fireplace. One rest room serves the entire campground, providing modern plumbing and hot showers ($). There is a sanitary dump station for RVs, but no hookups. Also, located in the day use area is a large picnic shelter with rest rooms.
Area Attractions: Floating Bridge, Marvin Newton House, Brookfield; Norwich University Museum, Northfield; Vermont State House, State Museum of the Vermont Historical Society, Montpelier; Barre Granite Quarries, Graniteville and Websterville; John Selby Maple Museum, Barre; Historical Museum, Randolph. |
