Comments: This is a Kauai County Campground, at $3 a head, reserve early, open to camping only on weekends. This is one of the best surfing beachs on the Island, from the camping area, one can watch dozens of surfers up and running at any given moment, dust to dawn. Camping is on a grassed lawn, parking is mostly on the beach, above high tide mark (cept in storm times). Surfers start to arrive with the first rays of sun, and come and go all day, many taking a quick break from work, the last leaving at dark. This beach has bathrooms, with outside cold showers, with privacy fence around the showers. It has a long fishing pier, with a covered picnicing area out at the end, with tables. It has swiming areas, and a great place for beginner surfers to learn at. Lessons on surfing are available, as are board and gear rentals, and kayaks to rent, and has a food truck that is there most of the day. Entertainment is often performed at this beach, check schedules. Skeeters can be found on any Kauai beach, but the trade winds keep them at bay most of the time, can be bad in the evening if the winds die down (these are beach skeeters, hiking in the mountains is bug free). The town of Hanalei is a beautiful little place, many shops, restaurants, all within walking distance. The big rock outcrop, seen in the movie Bali High, is very visable from this beach, looking north. I'd highly recomend a weekend at this campground for anyone camping Kauai.
