Short Summary
state park campground in prairie setting
Comments:
Bong was originally going to be an AF base but after land was bought and cleared and the runway leveled & graveled, the govt changed its mind. After many years it became a state rec. area, with a day use area frequented by hunters & hunting dog trainers, rocketry and model plane enthusiasts, and off-roaders, and a small no-hookup CG. About 15 years ago several new CG loops were constructed, one with elec. hookups (20/30 amp) and shower buildings, and the park has grown in popularity. Sites are spacious, many with native-plant shrubbery in between for privacy; a few have sweeping views of the prairie. Hiking/riding trails are near the CG; there is a small visitor center offering ranger programs on weekends. We enjoy camping here several times a season.
