| Short Summary |
Lots of kids! |
Comments: The bathrooms and other areas were very well cleaned, and even on one of the busiest weekends of the year the conditions were terrific.
Most of the sites are "average" sized with enough space for 2 tents, 1 car, 1 table and a campfire + some chairs, they are also in a heavily wooded area with tall mature trees which block 85-95% of the sunlight.
Prior to the trip I was informed that there was a "one tent per site" restriction. From driving through the entire park it was apparent that this rule is not enforced in the least bit. Many sites had 2-3 tents or combinations of tent + camper seemed very popular as well.
The one car per site rule is enforced and while stopping to visit a friend's site I was asked (very nicely!) to move my car back to my site.
Another rule that doesn't seem to be enforced at all is the firewood policy. I didn't see any cars checked for outside wood.
They do sell wood on site for about $1.00 per log, or you could go down the road 1/2 mile and find farms selling it for about $0.30 per log. There is plenty of twigs and fallen wood to collect for kindling.
The pond on the campground is full of algae and pond plants making fishing very difficult unless you are skilled in weedless lures. From 10-5 there are a handful of folks tossing in lines and getting a bunch of sunnys but for bass you'll really need to get there between 6-9AM and 6-9PM. For a larger lake for fishing head East(I think) on 46 and take the left turn toward Mountain Lakes. There you'll find a significantly larger lake with less plant life.
This truly is a "family" oriented campsite, >75% of the sites had children. Because the camp sites are pretty close to each other there was a constant parade of children on bicycles or walking through the area and the sounds of babies crying and parents fighting with children was a constant. Luckily the noise dies down around 10PM but it kicks back up at about 8AM.
If your looking for peace and quiet this is not the place to go during weekend peak season when all sites are occupied.
Weekdays or off peak season would be a completely different story and I'm sure this place would be a fantastic spot!
WARNING: Avoid site 2 at all costs! It is directly next to the bathroom and you will hear the slamming of the doors at all hours, and congregations of folks waiting for their kids (or parents), and lots of pots and pans being cleaned up. Not to mention that there was no arrangement of car, tent, table, camp fire, chairs that was able to prevent people (of all ages) from walking directly through the center of this camp site!
