Comments:
This is a very nice quiet state park with the best water pressure we’ve ever had at a park. Our cell phone reception was good but my aircard for our computer was iffy, (Verizon). All of the sites have shelters with a picnic table and firering/grill. Although we didn't use the restrooms or showers we did look in and noticed that they were clean. The town of Carlsbad has an Albertson’s Market and a Super Walmart that we found to be well stocked. The park is close to the Living Desert Zoo & Gardens State Park which is an indoor/outdoor living museum ($5.00 per adult ) displaying more than 40 native animal species and hundreds of succulent plants from around the world. It’s a 1.3 mile self-guided tour which is a leisurely walk through various habitats. http://www.emnrd.state.nm.us/PRD/LivingDesert.htm Directly across from the entrance to Brantley Lake is the road leading to Sitting Bull Falls which is about 30 miles in. You will be traveling near some of the oil fields and there is a nasty smell every now and then. There are numerous picnic shelters, a modern restroom, drinking fountains and a very short walk to the falls. This is maintained by Lincoln National Forest and there is a fee of $5.00 per vehicle(half price if you hold a Golden Age Pass). We know they will take you on a guided tour of the caves that are behind the falls but you must call ahead. http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/lincoln/recreation/caves.shtml We spent a week at Brantley and really enjoyed ourselves. Carlsbad Caverns which are about an hours drive from Brantley were stunning!! We even stayed for the bat flight program at sunset, it was well worth the wait!
