The Granite State was one of the original thirteen
colonies, achieving statehood on June 12, 1788. It
was named after Hampshire, England by Captain John
Smith. The state's motto "Life free or die."
originates from a toast of General Stark given to his
soldiers, whose complete message was "Live Free Or
Die; Death Is Not The Worst of Evils."
Vacationers in New Hampshire will enjoy the state?s
many scenic areas including the Kancamangus Highway,
the White Mountains, Lake Winnipesaukee, as well as
the Seacoast. Those feeling adventurous can earn a
bumper sticker stating "This Car Climbed Mount
Washington", which is the tallest summit in New
England. The village of North Conway, which is
conveniently located in the area, provides access to
shopping and dining.
For those interested in "leaf peeping", the
state's foliage is such a draw that the government
has a web site which provides weekly reports by
region.
New Hampshire is home to Motorcycle Week in Laconia
each June, which draws crowds of 400,000 to Laconia.
Bike enthusiasts should also note the Loudon Classic,
which is the longest running motorcycle race in the
country. Loudon also is home to two Nascar events
each year.
